"I am employed as a chemical engineer/hydrometallurgist at ANSTO (the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation), which is located in the southern suburbs of Sydney. I work in the Minerals Division which is a separate commercial entity of ANSTO. It serves to provide research and commercial expertise to the uranium and mineral industries within Australia. The group is experienced in heap leaching, uranium leaching, precipitation, purification and wastewater treatment. ANSTO Minerals also investigates radioactive deportment in the mineral sands and the alumina industries.

My position is in the commercial section and involves solving client problems through conducting laboratory and pilot scale testwork. The projects are quite varied. In the last year the projects undertaken included solving uranium leaching problems, recovery of uranium from wastewater and purification projects involving solvents and ion exchange resins. My latest project involves evaluating the effect of operating parameters such as pH, temperature, stirring speed and reagents and their concentration on the physical and chemical properties of uranium peroxide precipitates. In my spare time I enjoy exploring the sites around Sydney and I am learning to kite surf as the wind is a lot lighter than the Western Australian conditions I am used to for windsurfing."
