Program Highlights of 2005-2006
- Industry Funds the Third Summer Jobs Program
The Summer Jobs Program for undergraduate university students was run
for the third straight year. Held for ten weeks over the summer university
vacation, the Summer Jobs Program has evolved into an industry-sponsored
program in the new Parker CRC for Integrated Hydrometallurgy Solutions.
Total combined sponsorship of A$45,000 from Alcoa World Alumina, BHP
Billiton, Minara Resources and Rio Tinto enabled the 2005-2006 program
to run successfully. Again an international flavour was provided by
the inclusion of two students from the University of Cape Town in South
Africa. One of the nine employed students is now doing Honours in the
Parker Centre and another student will start a PhD within the Centre
in August 2006.
- Vocational Training for Processing Plant Operators in the
Minerals Industry
Plant operator-level training for industry is a new focus for the Parker
Centre’s Education Program. The aim is to provide industry with
operator training in minerals processing for the alumina and gold industries
through the development of Certificate II, III and Diploma level courses.
The Parker Centre’s expertise, state-of-the-art research knowledge
and the ability to provide support in the form of pilot plant facilities
is being combined with the Central TAFE (Perth, Western Australia) expertise
as a registered training organisation (RTO) for course development and
delivery.
