Awards
and Other Honours Won by Parker Centre Students
2005
- Parker Centre PhD student Marc Steffens was awarded
the 2005 GB O'Malley Medal by the Australasian Institute of Mining and
Metallurgy (AusIMM). He received this medal, AusIMM's highest student
award, for his presentation of the paper, ”Extraction of Nickel
from Acidic Leach Solutions using Electrostatic Pseudo Liquid Membrane
(ESPLIM)”, at the Conference of Metallurgists 2005, an internationally
recognised peer reviewed conference held in Calgary, Canada in August
2005.
2003
- Parker Centre PhD student Felicia Lee (Curtin University)
was granted a scholarship by Washington State University (WSU), USA
to assist her to attend the Nanometer Scale Summer School (Physical
Chemistry on the Nanometer Scale) at WSU from 27 July to 3 August
2003.
2002
- In March 2002, Phil Heckley, a Parker Centre PhD student at
the Western Australian School of Mines (Curtin University), won the
Best Student Presentation Award at the International Solvent Extraction
Conference 2002 in Capetown, South Africa for his paper entitled "Cobalt
Extraction from Nickel Laterite Ores Using Electrostatic Pseudo Liquid
Membrane (ESPLIM)".
- In April 2002, Daniel Helm, a Parker Centre PhD student at
the Western Australian School of Mines (Curtin University), was awarded
a MERIWA Supplementary Scholarship.
- Yvonne Power, a Parker Centre PhD student in the School of
Engineering, Murdoch University, won the GUS 2002 Best Presentation
Award for her presentation at the Gensym GUS (Gensym User Society) 2002
meeting held in Boston, USA in April 2002.
- Jennifer Lowe, a Parker Centre PhD student at Curtin University,
was selected to attend the 2002 CRC Association Conference in Sydney
(21-23 May 2002) with her travel, accommodation and conference registration
paid. Jennifer presented a three minute summary of her work on reducing
the build up of solid material in industrial and domestic pipes.
- The Surface Science Group of the WA Branch of the Royal Australian
Chemical Institute awarded two DFA Koch travel grants to the following
two Parker Centre PhD students to assist with travel to an approved
conference:
Mitch Loan (Curtin University) - attended the 15th
International Symposium on Industrial Crystallisation in Sorrento, Italy
in August 2002 and presented a paper titled "An example of metastability
at the nanoscale. Or is it?".
Aleks Nikoloski (Murdoch University) - will present a paper at
the 6th International Symposium on Electrochemistry in Mineral
and Materials Processing in Paris, France in May 2003 titled "The
passivation of iron during the leaching of pre-reduced laterites in
ammoniacal solutions".
2001
- In September 2001, Aleks Nikoloski, a Parker Centre PhD student
at Murdoch University, was awarded the 2001 GB O'Malley Medal by the
Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM). He received
this medal, AusIMM's highest student award, for the paper he presented
on his Honours research at the 7th Mill Operators Conference.
